We showed for the first time that oral administration of phycocyanin and phycocyanobilin extracted from Spirulina platensis protects against renal dysfunction in db/db mice by inhibiting oxidative stress. Because spirulina is used as a nutritional supplement in many countries, it may be feasible to produce commercial quantities of phycobilin. This study suggests that oral administration of phycocyanin and phycocyanobilin may represent a feasible and novel therapeutic approach to prevent diabetic nephropathy.

The anti-inflammatory effect of Spirulina was further confirmed by decreases in TNF-alpha immunostaining in the inflamed paw and in the myeloperoxidase release from human neutrophils. The results showed that the anti-diabetic effect of Spirulina platensis is already manifested after a 5-day treatment.

Significant reductions in blood glucose, lipid profile (triglycerides, cholesterol and LDL, VLDL) and liver function markers (SGPT and SGOT) were recorded along with elevated level of HDL-C at the end of 30 days therapy of 5 or 10 per cent Spirulina maxima aquous extract.
