We have already presented the health benefits of Spirulina in Cholesterol. Diabetes (type 2 and type 1) is a complicated disease which is directly related with obesity, high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides, and what we called metabolic syndrome. Although only the positive effect of lowering cholesterol is enough to help a diabetes patient here we present some scientific evidence which shows that Spirulina rich diet have positive effects directly to the diabetes disease.

Phycocyanin and phycocyanobilin from Spirulina platensis protect against diabetic nephropathy by inhibiting oxidative stress. Zheng J. et al. American Journal of Physiology. Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology. 2013 Jan 15;304(2):R110-20.
Conclusion remarks from the paper
We showed for the first time that oral administration of phycocyanin and phycocyanobilin extracted from Spirulina platensis protects against renal dysfunction in db/db mice by inhibiting oxidative stress. Because spirulina is used as a nutritional supplement in many countries, it may be feasible to produce commercial quantities of phycobilin. This study suggests that oral administration of phycocyanin and phycocyanobilin may represent a feasible and novel therapeutic approach to prevent diabetic nephropathy.
Spirulina protects diabetes patients from kidney problems.
Our Notes about Spirulina Health Benefits from this study
When you have diabetes (type 2 or type 1) it is possible to develop kidney problems. This research showed that two basic compounds of Spirulina, phycocyanin and phycocyanobilin can protect kidneys because of their anti-oxidant properties.

The microalga Spirulina platensis presents anti-inflammatory action as well as hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic properties in diabetic rats. Joventino IP et al. Journal of Complementary and Integrative Medicine. 2012 Aug 10;9:Article 17. doi: 10.1515/1553-3840.1534.
Conclusion remarks from the paper
Spirulina decreased glycemia as well as triglyceride and total cholesterol levels of diabetic rats. Levels of urea and creatinine were also reduced, while liver transaminases were unaltered. The anti-inflammatory effect of Spirulina was further confirmed by decreases in TNF-alpha immunostaining in the inflamed paw and in the myeloperoxidase release from human neutrophils. The results showed that the anti-diabetic effect of Spirulina platensis is already manifested after a 5-day treatment.
5 days with Spirulina Powder is enough to start showing anti-diabetic effects
Our Notes about Spirulina Health Benefits from this study
This study was conducted in diabetic rats. They used several different Spirulina dosages, 25, 50 and 100 mg/kg per day. Only after 5 days of treatment the results showed anti-diabetic effects of Spirulina.

Effect of food diet supplements with chromium on the clinical and metabolic parameters in type 2 diabetic patients. Sharafetdinov KhKh et al. Voprosy pitaniia 2004;73(5):17-20.
Conclusion remarks from the paper
The results investigations indicated that a chromium-enriched diet has beneficial effects on basal and postprandial glycaemia, the content of cholesterol and triglycerides in serum in compared with a traditional hypocaloric diet.
A daily dosage of Chromium extracted from Spirulina Powder had beneficial results in diabetes.
Our Notes about Spirulina Health Benefits from this study
In this study it was used Chromium as an extract from Spirulina. The Chromium-Spirulina dosage was 50mcg per day. This dosage was used to examine the effects in type 2 diabetic patients. The results showed that the supplement was beneficial for all the main type 2 diabetes indicators.

Alleviation of metabolic abnormalities induced by excessive fructose administration in Wistar rats by Spirulina maxima. Urmila Jarouliya et al. Indian Journal of Medical Research 2012 March; 135(3): 422–428.
Conclusion remarks from the paper
The aim of the study was to determine whether Spirulina maxima could serve as a therapeutic agent to correct metabolic abnormalities induced by excessive fructose administration in Wistar rats. Significant reductions in blood glucose, lipid profile (triglycerides, cholesterol and LDL, VLDL) and liver function markers (SGPT and SGOT) were recorded along with elevated level of HDL-C at the end of 30 days therapy of 5 or 10 per cent Spirulina maxima aquous extract.
30 days treatment with Spirulina changed blood sugar indicators.
Our Notes about Spirulina Health Benefits from this study
Treatment with Spirulina extract had significant health benefits in diabetic rats in only 30 days time. There was directly reduction in blood sugar, the basic problem in diabetes type 2 disease.

Effect of a zinc-enriched diet on the clinical and metabolic parameters in type 2 diabetic patients. Sharafetdinov KhKh et al. Voprosy pitaniia 2004;73(4):17-20.
Conclusion remarks from the paper
It was investigated the influence of a diet with zinc supplementation on dynamic of glycaemia, lipid profile, blood pressure and weight in type 2 diabetic patients. Traditional hypocaloric diet was supplemented with zinc-spirulina(7.5 mg zinc per day). The results investigations indicated that a zinc-enriched diet has beneficial effects on basal and postprandial glycaemia, the content of cholesterol and triglycerides in serum in compared with a traditional hypocaloric diet.
A daily dosage of Zinc extracted from Spirulina Powder had beneficial results in diabetes.
Our Notes about Spirulina Health Benefits from this study
In this study it was used zinc extracted from Spirulina. The results showed beneficial effects in type 2 diabetic patients.

Spirulina protects against rosiglitazone induced osteoporosis in insulin resistance rats. Gupta S. et al. Diabetes research and clinical practice 2010 Jan;87(1):38-43.
Conclusion remarks from the paper
Findings suggest that combination therapy of Rosiglitazone with Spirulina reduced the risk of osteoporosis in insulin resistance rats. Additionally, Spirulina complemented the antihyperglycemic and antilipidemic activity of Rosiglitazone.
Spirulina can help prevent osteoporosis in diabetes patients.
Our Notes about Spirulina Health Benefits from this study
Osteoporosis is one of the side effects of diabetes. The current study showed that daily treatment with Spirulina has positive effects in the osteoporosis effect of patients with diabetes.
The above scientific results clearly shows that Spirulina Powder (or any other form) treatment can significantly help diabetic patients. Specially patients with diabetes type 2, which they can still improve all their health indicators in blood, they can benefit a lot by taking a daily Spirulina dosage with their nutrition.
