Spirulina Health Benefits. Cholesterol.

Because we always want to support our recommendation for Spirulina supplement with scientific evidence here we present the main scientific papers which research how Spirulina rich diet effects Cholesterol levels in the blood.

Spirulina Health Benefits and Cholesterol 1

1)

Title of the scientific paper

The hypolipidaemic effects of Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) supplementation in a Cretan population: a prospective study. Mazokopakis et al. Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture 2014 Feb;94(3):432-7.

Conclusion remarks from the paper

Spirulina supplementation at a dose of 1 g daily has powerful hypolipidaemic effects, especially on the triglyceride concentration in dyslipidaemic Cretan outpatients.

52 patients treated with 1gr Spirulina per day for 3-months. Significat health benefits in all cholesterol related indicators.

Our notes about Spirulina Health Benefits from this study

Fifty-two adult Cretan outpatients, median age 47 years old, with diagnosed dyslipidaemia consumed orally 1 gr Spirulina per day for 12 weeks. At the end of the 3-month intervention period the mean levels of triglycerides, low density lipoprotein-cholesterol, total cholesterol, non-high density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels, and the ratio of total cholesterol to high-density lipoproteincholesterol were significantly decreased. This research shows clearly that with only 1gr of Spirulina per day gives significant health benefits.

2)

Title of the paper

Hepatoprotective effects of Spirulina maxima in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: a case series. Journal of medical case reports 2010 Apr 7;4:103.

Three Hispanic Mexican patients underwent ultrasonography and were treated with 4.5 g/day of Spirulina maxima for three months. Their blood samples before and after the treatment determined triacylglycerols, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, alanine aminotransferase and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. The results were assessed using ultrasound.

Conclusion remarks from the paper

Treatment had therapeutic effects as evidenced by ultrasonography and the aminotransferase data. Hypolipidemic effects were also shown. We conclude that Spirulina maxima may be considered an alternative treatment for patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases and dyslipidemic disorder.

Health benefits was confirmed in 'fatty liver' patiens with ultrasonography.

Our Notes about Spirulina Health Benefits from this study

In this research the benefits of a Spirulina rich diet was also confirmed with ultrasonography in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The patients was treated with 4.5 gr per day of Spirulina which was from the genus Spirulina maxima. The treatment took place for three months.

3)

Title of the paper

A randomized study to establish the effects of spirulina in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. Lee EH et al. Nutrition Research and Practice 2008 Winter;2(4):295-300

Conclusion remarks from the paper

Spirulina intervention brought in favorable effect on blood lipids, anti-oxidant capacity, and inflammatory response in Korean patients with type 2 diabetes. Our results also suggest that Spirulina is a promising agent as a functional food for the management of diabetes. Further studies with larger sample size and longer duration are required to ascertain the mechanism of spirulina's actions on lipid profiles, immune variables, and antioxidant capacity.

8 gr per day for 12 weeks. Reduction of all triglycerides related levels.

Our Notes about Spirulina Health Benefits from this study

37 people were treated for this experiment. They were taking 8gr per day of Spirulina freeze-dried pills for 12 consecutive weeks. The results showed clearly that there was a reduction of triglycerides levels in the Spirulina rich diet. Also some other health indicators where increased.

4)

Title of the paper

A randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled study to establish the effects of spirulina in elderly Koreans. Park HJ et al. Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism 2008;52(4):322-8.

This study was conducted to determine the antioxidant capacity, immunomodulatory and lipid-lowering effects of spirulina in healthy elderly subjects and to document the effectiveness of spirulina as a functional food for the elderly.

Conclusion remarks from the paper

The results demonstrate that spirulina has favorable effects on lipid profiles, immune variables, and antioxidant capacity in healthy, elderly male and female subjects and is suitable as a functional food.

All researches in humans showed significant health benefits of Spirulina.

Our Notes about Spirulina Health Benefits from this study

In this research was examined 78 individuals, aged from 60-87 years old. They were taking 8 gr per day of Spirulina for 16 weeks. The results showed clearly that all the people with Spirulina rich diet can have significant health benefits according their cholesterol and their lipidemic profile.

5)

Title of the paper

Antihyperlipemic and antihypertensive effects of Spirulina maxima in an open sample of mexican population: a preliminary report. Patricia V Torres-Duran et al. Lipids in Health and Disease. 2007; 6: 33.

Conclusion remarks from the paper

The Spirulina maxima showed a hypolipemic effect, especially on the TAG and the LDL-C concentrations but indirectly on TC and HDL-C values. It also reduces systolic and diastolic blood pressure. We propose that because of these pharmacological properties, Spirulina could be used as a dietary supplement on dyslipidemic and hypertensive patients.

Our Notes about Spirulina Health Benefits from this study

In this study people was taking 2 gr per day of Spirulina for six weeks. After treatment it was observed a significant decrease in all prevalence parameters studied with a major effect observed in the oldest age group (49–65 years). This is very important because a lot of chronic-degenerative disorders related with dyslipidemia, incrementing their prevalence in this age group could be attenuated with Spirulina consumption.

6)

Title of the paper

Hypolipidemic, Antioxidant and Antiinflammatory Activities of Microalgae Spirulina. Deng et al. Cardiovascular Therapeutics Volume 28, Issue 4, page e33-e45, August 2010.

Conclusion remarks from the paper

Recently, great attention and extensive studies have been devoted to evaluate the therapeutic benefits of Spirulina on various diseased conditions including hypercholesterolemia, hyperglycerolemia, cardiovascular diseases, inflammatory diseases, cancer and viral infections. The cardiovascular benefits of Spirulina are primarily resulted from its hypolipidemic, antioxidant and antiinflammatory activities. Data from preclinical studies with various animal models consistently demonstrate the hypolipidemic activity of Spirulina. Although differences in study design, sample size and patient conditions resulting in minor inconsistency in response to Spirulina supplementation, the findings from human clinical trials are largely consistent with the hypolipidemic effects of Spirulina observed in the preclinical studies.

On almost all the studies there was a significant decrease of total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL and VLDL cholesterol.

Our Notes about Spirulina Health Benefits from this study

This paper tries to concentrate all the available studies conducted on benefits of Spirulina diet until 2010. On several different human clinical studies, 15-80 humans (patients and healthy people) were taking 2-8 gr of Spirulina daily for 2-5 months. On almost all the studies there was a significant decrease of total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL and VLDL cholesterol. More clinical trials needed to specify better the pattern of Spirulina dosage and effect under different health circumstances.

Spirulina Health Benefits and Cholesterol 2

From the above scientific results it is extremely clear that the health benefits of Spirulina rich diet in cholesterol and in all the relative lipidemic blood indicators are extraordinary and significant. We totally recommend start eating/taking Spirulina powder, tablets or capsules if you are searching for the best foods to lower cholesterol. As always we suggest to make a personal case study to verify the results. If you are having cholesterol related problems, take a medical check up before taking Spirulina supplement and after 2-3 months of treatment with at least 1 to 8 gr per day. If your results are showing significant improvement nothing is just a coincidence!

As always we suggest to take your doctors medical advice before try anything new in your diet.
